Tender evergreen shrubs are prone to suffering some frost damage over the winter. The damaged foliage can detract from the overall appearance of the plant and is a potential entry point for pest and disease.
Prune back to healthy foliage and you can also cut out any misplaced and overshooting stems. If your garden is prone to late frosts due to its microclimate, I'd delay this work until early next month!

Shrubs such as Cotinus and Elder have their best coloured (most vibrant) leaves on new stems through the growing season. By pruning hard now, you will achieve that 'wow' factor later in the summer! After pruning, apply a general fertiliser to give the plant a boost....

The ground they are going in should be well prepared. They are 'greedy' plants so a good amount of organic matter and a slow release granular feed applied to the planting hole will help get the best from them over the coming months.
Also, install whatever sort of support you will be using before planting the tubers, this prevents them being damaged at a later date and reminds you where they are!
